Saying I’m disgusted with the latest debate concerning our freedoms is an understatement. It may sound dramatic, but the issue of Net Neutrality is a serious one. Not sure what Net Neutrality is? Check out the video from Mashable below. It’s a quick, easy run-down of Net Nuetrality and why it should be important to you.

In a nutshell, cable companies want to implement tiered pricing plans (similar to cellular data plans) that will affect  speeds relating to websites, gaming, and streaming video. If left unchecked, cable companies will provide a “fast lane” available for sites and applications that can pay. So gamers, expect services such as Xbox Live, Playstation Network, and even Steam to pay exorbitant fees for better speeds. And the consumer? Expect to pay more to do what you like. From increased internet fees, to paying more for your favorite applications. It’s all going to affect you and your wallet.

Look, I understand cable companies need to make a living. But squeezing the consumer like this isn’t the way. Saying such practices are unacceptable is an understatement.

Today the FCC voted to open the topic of Net Neutrality for debate.

In the meantime, Reddit has a fantastic blog post (where I obtained most of this information) detailing the topic along with they many things you can do to make yourself heard. You can also sign two online petitions advocating an Open Internet here and here. You can also sign Reddit’s petition here.

If you live outside of the US, you can still help us by making yourself heard. Friends from other countries or across the pond can make themselves heard here.

Lastly, you can contact your Senators and Representatives. Tell them, ” I Support Net Neutrality and ask the FCC to reclassify Internet Service Providers as Title Two Common Carriers.”

Update – Thanks to fellow forum-goer Terran over at Evil Avatar for bringing this fascinating piece to my attention which explains the history of the whole Net Neutrality issue and why we may be in for a LONG fight.
